Whew! Settlement is done. It almost didn't happen though because of my asshole loan officer. Everyone involved in the transaction was professional and courteous and this guy was just a total jerk. Here's what happened: Remember the last thing I wrote about that good faith estimate? Well that never got resolved. At no point in the process leading up to and even during settlement did I see a completed good faith estimate with the correct numbers. I realize that by definition an estimate is not exact, but I had no idea how much money I needed to bring to settlement before I went. Sixteen hours before settlement the lender couldn't tell me if I needed $792 or $8000 or $3000. And all he could keep saying was not to worry about it and I was making too big an issue of it. Wouldn't anyone in his or her right mind be worried about it? How many people can be indifferent about whether it'll be $792 or $8000? Either one...fine with me...no problem. Right. So while he was on speakerphone, in front of all the people sitting at the settlement table, he got completely belligerent and threatened to pull the loan from me. Trust me, it was not a pleasant situation. But you know what? F%&k him. The moral of this story is this: 1) make sure when you're buying a house you get a good faith estimate from the lender and leave yourself plenty of time to switch lenders if you don't like the terms. In my case, I felt I had too good a deal on the purchase to blow it out of the water because of the financing. I think the lender knew my position and exploited it. 2) When you're sitting there signing your life away, the only person who really has your best interests in mind is you. If you don't feel comfortable about something, you have to speak up, even if everyone else thinks you're the asshole. I think it was clear in this case that I wasn't the bad guy though. The good news: settlement is done and the house is mine! Now on to the fun part.

Home ownership is one of our American dreams. You have been on the "road less traveled" so long you're just now realizing you have finally come home. Home's not just a place to be, it is heartfelt and a place that you will be happy to stay in for a very long time. After 48 years, I finally found that too! Glad to know that we think so much alike.
whew!!! congratulations!
